FACT: The human body is estimated to be about 60-70% water. Our blood is about 90% water.
FACT: There is about 1.4 million cubic kilometres of water on earth. This amount has stayed consistent for the last 2 billion years. But only 1% of the world’s fresh water is available to consume.
FACT: Water moves around in a continuous cycle. Over a 100-year period, a water molecule spends 98 years in the ocean, 20 months as ice, 2 weeks in lakes and rivers and less than a week in the atmosphere.
FACT: All things (even those that are solid) are made up of water. Example, a chicken is 75% water , a pineapple 85% and an elephant 70% (excluding the water they suck up via their trunks!).
FACT: Humans are only able to consume fresh water, which is mostly trapped in ice caps, oceans and glaciers, leaving only 1% of the world’s water for us to drink. Thus, even though we’re surrounded by water, there is a real concern about not having access to sufficient drinkable water.
True health cannot occur without proper hydration of the body. Yet it is probably true that drinking enough water each day is not at the top of most peoples’ priorities.
Water is often called a solvent because it is the key to so many bodily processes, e.g. water helps to break waste and nutrients down in the cell so that they can be moved through the various membranes and natural filters in the body. It also helps to transport oxygen to your cells, and protects your joints and organs by lubricating them.
If insufficient water is consumed, it can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney problems, increased blood pressure due to thicker blood, increased intensities of asthma and allergies, premature aging, constipation and decreased cognitive functions.
Inspite of this, there is currently no universal agreed quantity of water that must be consumed daily. According to the Institute of Medicine, it is recommended that a person consumes an average of 3L of water daily for men, and 2.2L of water daily for women. This number can and will vary depending on how active a person is.
